Monday, Dec. 2
GOALS: Understand connotations.
- For SFB #15, complete the introductory vocabulary; PPC the
excerpt, record your start time, read, and record your finish
time. Then answer the ten comprehension and vocabulary questions.
- From the yellow reader, read John Chaffee's "Analyzing
Different Accounts of the Assassination of Malcolm X." Circle any
words with negative connotations. Bring the article to class on
Wednesday.
- By next Monday, write an annotated bibliography of at least
THREE articles about African Americans from the newspaper and/or
mainstream magazines. For each source, use the APA format for
reference pages; each summary should answer the basic "who, what,
why, when, where" questions. PROVIDE SIX COPIES, one of which you
will turn in to me for credit.
- If you're interested in securing extra credit, turn in SFB #10
by Friday.
- Also for extra credit, you have the option to write a one-page
report on the documentary, "Bowling for Columbine." In this
report, determine what Michael Moore's thesis is, as well as which
evidence you found to be the most convincing and why.
Wednesday, Dec. 4
GOALS: Apply understanding of connotations. Prepare to read
Chideya essay.
- See Monday's articles assignment.
- From the yellow reader, PPC Farai Chideya's "Holding the Media
Accountable." Complete "KW." Read the entire article, then
complete "L+." In "L," address at least four major points. The
entire KLW+ chart is due on Monday.
Friday, Dec. 6
GOALS: Complete analysis of Malcolm X excerpts.
- See Monday's articles assignment.
- See Wednesday's homework for the Chideya article.
Monday, Dec. 9
GOALS: Draw inferences from visual aids.
- Read the annotated bibliographies; categorize the articles
under related topics (and yes, articles may be used more than
once). On a separate page, what conclusions can you draw about the
media coverage of African-Americans? What connections can you make
between Chideya's assertions and your own research findings?
Wednesday, Dec. 11
GOALS: Prepare for the final exam.
- Prepare for the final exam, which is on Friday, Dec. 13, from
8:10-10:40, in the computer lab in Building Two. You may use your
annotated Chideya article and a dictionary. Remember also to
review all four sets of the prefixes and roots. Bring your disk so
that you can save your responses periodically.
