AlertU - Emergency Text Message Notification
Enables college administration to send emergency information by text messages to cell phones on a subscription basis. To receive college alerts, enter your cell phone number in for your college below. After you click Submit, you will receive a text message asking you to Reply Y to complete the sign up process.
AlertU is supported by all major carriers: Alltel, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Cellular One, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. Small regional carriers, pre-paid phones and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) often do not support short code access. If your carrier is not currently supported, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org as new carrier support is constantly being added to the AlertU platform.
What is AlertU?
AlertU is an emergency short messaging service or SMS (text) messaging alert technology developed for college and university communities. Campus administrators send text messages to subscriber’s mobile devices communicating critical campus updates to students, staff and faculty in real-time. Friends and family members are also available to receive instant updates.
How is AlertU utilized on campus?
The AlertU platform will only be used in emergency situations where students, faculty and staff are in need of real-time emergency notifications. AlertU is not to be used for non-emergency information or general school updates as the messaging will lose effectiveness.
How do I sign up?
You can enroll by following the simple instructions on WebSMART, your campuses web site or at www.smccd.edu/alertu
Do I have to be a student to sign up?
NO! Anyone in the community can sign up.
I attend more than one campus; do I have to sign up more than once?
Yes, you need to sign up for each campus you wish to receive messages from.
How do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe, text “stop” or “unsub” to AlertU at 253788. This will unsubscribe you to from all campus alerts.
How is Campus AlertU Program managed?
AlertU supports current campus emergency action plans as an additional emergency communication channel to students, staff and faculty. Once a situation is declared an emergency, the designated AlertU administrator(s) sends an alert to the designated subscribers.
Will I receive SPAM messages by subscribing to AlertU?
No SPAM! Subscriber information is only accessible to campus administrators.
Why is it necessary to Opt-In?
Telemarketing and anti-SPAM regulations strictly warn against sending unsolicited text SPAM messages. Subscribers simply have to Opt-In, providing permission to send text alerts to their phones.
Does it cost anything to subscribe to AlertU?
Depending on your mobile phone plan, you may be charged a nominal amount when you receive a text message.
How long does it take for messages to be received during an emergency?
Messages will be delivered to carriers in less than 5 minutes. Delays in receiving a message can occur due individual carrier service.
I work at the District office, which campus should I subscribe to?
District office alerts will be sent to the College of San Mateo.
