District Sustainability Initiative
The San Mateo County Community College District Sustainability Initiative is comprised of nine initiatives formed by the District-wide and campus sustainability committees. In 2013, Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College developed comprehensive campus sustainability plans with a purpose of guiding the campuses towards becoming more sustainable institutions. The plans have been going through updates in 2016 and 2017 and our hope is to establish District-wide shared goals and are drafted below. Accomplish Net Zero Energy by 2030 by reducing energy consumption and demand. Engage in continuous monitoring of loads and make adjustments while prioritizing safety, security, comfort, and functionality.
Reduce fresh water consumption per square foot of building space by 50% by 2025 compared to 2013 baseline.
Accomplish Net Zero Waste by 2025. Engage, Staff, students and the community in goal setting, accomplishment and challenges. Report at established intervals on progress and waste diversion lessons learned.
Enhance learning environments through the use of locally produced, safe, efficient and environmentally responsible materials and systems. Support interactive and project based learning through Campus as a Living Laboratory approaches. Improve, modify and construct facilities with the future needs of students, staff, faculty, and the community in mind while engaging current stakeholders in the planning process.
Establish a greenhouse gas emissions baseline and set targets for reduction based on stationary and well as mobile emissions categories.
Engage, Staff, students and the community in goal setting, accomplishment and challenges for transportation needs.
Report at established intervals on progress and waste diversion lessons learned. Work collaboratively with General Services, Auxiliary Services and others to establish a green purchasing policy by 2018.
Creatively integrate environmental awareness, social responsibility and sustainability into existing courses. Develop new curricula and training programs with a focus on environmental sustainability. (Current Cañada Goal, to be updated for District Goal).
Encourage awareness of and participation in sustainability efforts and positively influence the campus community to champion sustainability, in the community, and in their personal lives. (Current Cañada Goal, to be updated for District Goal).
