How do External Exams (AP, IB, CLEP) Affect My Transcript?

Information and Limitations

If you have completed one or more external exams (AP, IB, CLEP) and plan to complete an associate degree, or complete the requirements for CSU GE or IGETC certification within the San Mateo County Community College District, read this section.

The San Mateo County Community College District applies external exam results to Associate Degree General Education Requirements in the same manner as the California State University system applies external exam results to meet CSU General Education requirements.

You must have official exam results sent to your home college Admissions and Records Office. Once you have enrolled and the term begins, the Admissions and Records Office will process your external exam results and you can view Degree Works to see how your results meet the following:

  • Associate Degree General Education Requirements
  • Associate Degree for Transfer General Education Requirements
  • CSU GE Certification
  • IGETC Certification

There area a number of limitations and restrictions associated with the application of credit generated from external exams. As an example, if a college course is taken after an external exam and the college course duplicates all or some of the content covered in the exam, you will not earn credit for both the external exam and the college course and typically the external exam credit is not applied.
