David Mertes (left) on tour of campus with visitor -
(from publicity release)
" Joseph W. Fordyce, current president of the American Association of Junior Colleges, accepted President David Mertes' invitation to visit the College of San Mateo campus on Thursday, November 4. President of Central Florida Junio College in 1960-66, President of Santa Fe Junior College, Gainesville, Florida in 1966-71, and newly-appointed president of the Junior College Districe of St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, Dr. Fordyce spoke of the differences between the junior college systems of Florida and California. He stated Florida's junior colleges are relatively new, starting with state-designated districts petitioning for authorization to build junior colleges only 12 years ago. However, at the present time, they are progressing rapidly as all areas of Florida have joined the junior college system. In California, on the other hand, we have benefited from community -located junior colleges -- promoted by more grass roots efforts -- for many years. Dr. Fordyce, who visited the campus shortly after it was completed in 1962, reflected that the College of San Mateo is often used as a model for the nation's junior colleges."
