Announcement from John Hubbard and dated February 25, 1965, reads "C.S.M. RECORD-SETTERS -- These three College of San Mateo students are primarily responsible for school's best performance in history at annual Tyro Speech Tournament, which drew appreximately 150 entrants from 21 universities, colleges and junior colleges in three Western states. Merylee Rucker, center, of....... , San Mateo, won award of excellence in expository speaking, while James Custer, left, ...... ., San Mateo, and David Vallerga, ......, Belmont, earned same honor as a debate team. Custer and Vallerga were the only junior college debaters sleected for high award, winning five of six matches and beating lower-division teams from such institutions as Sacramento State College and University of California at Santa Barbara. Besides her individual prize, Miss Rucker also joined Susan Polcar of ....., Redwood City, in debate competition, and they posted a 3-3 match record. Students were accompanied to tournament, held at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, by speech instructor George W. Short."
