Districtwide Student Housing at College of San Mateo Project

Since 2020, the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) has dedicated resources to compete for State funding to build desperately needed student housing.  In late 2022, the District submitted a project grant application to secure State funding to construct Districtwide student housing at College of San Mateo.  The District’s application ranked 5th out of 21 fiercely competitive community college district applications.  The top 6 applicants were awarded funding from the State of California as approved in the 2023-2024 budget.

This project's total budget is $86 million, with $56 million awarded from the State and $30 million dedicated from local District funds. The District is bound by the commitments of the submitted project program in the application; therefore, the size and location of this project are firm.

HPI Architecture/Design Collective will design the student residence project.  The residence will accommodate 310 students and a full-time resident director, who will live on-site, and be charged with developing and managing a community that promotes engagement, learning, respect for diversity, and student success.  The 86,000 gross square feet, three-story building, which includes 93 units (standard and mobility), will be located in parking Lot B on the southwest side of College of San Mateo. Affordable student monthly rents will range from $475-$920 (2022 rates - will be adjusted when the building opens).
