Districtwide Student Housing at College of San Mateo
Since 2020, the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) has dedicated
resources to compete for state funding to build desperately needed student housing.
Fifty-eight percent of SMCCCD's students are housing insecure and six percent are
homeless. In late 2022, the District submitted a project grant application to secure
state funding for Districtwide student housing at College of San Mateo. The District’s
application ranked fifth out of 21 competitive community college district applications,
with the top six applicants awarded funding as approved in the 2023-2024 budget.
This project's total budget is $86 million, with $56 million awarded from the state
and $30 million from local District funds. The District is bound by the commitments
of the submitted project program in the application; therefore, the size and location
of this project are firm.
HPI Architecture/Design Collective designed the 316-bed student housing project, which
will serve students from SMCCCD's three regional campuses. Located adjacent to the
College of San Mateo’s campus core, it will offer a variety of unit types, from semi-suite
shared bedrooms to studio and 4-bedroom apartments, catering to a range of student
needs. Common spaces will include community kitchens, laundry facilities, study rooms,
academic and health counseling offices, a basic needs food pantry, a manager’s office,
a leasing office, custodial and storage space, parcel lockers, and diverse shared
and individual study areas. The building will feature two courtyards: one campus-facing
for informal activities, and another with southern views designed for active, recreational
use.
A full-time resident director, living on-site, will oversee the community, fostering
engagement, learning, respect for diversity, and student success. The Student Life
Program—including athletics, recreation, various clubs, and student government—will
be located nearby, just steps from the housing complex.
