Lockdown Barricade

When is a Lockdown/Barricade Response Used?

A Lockdown/Barricade response is warranted when there is an immediate threat of violence on District grounds. The primary objective of a lockdown response is to ensure that all students, faculty, staff, children in care, and visitors are quickly secured in a room, away from danger. If you are on District grounds during a lockdown/barricade event, quickly do the following:

  • Find a Secure Location
  • Lock all Doors
  • Cover Windows and Turn off Lights
  • Silence Cellphones
  • Remain Quiet and Alert
  • Remember, no one is allowed to enter or exit unless directed by Law Enforcement, EMS, Emergency Management, or Public Safety

Assisting People With Disabilities

To Assist Visually Impaired Persons:

  • Explain the nature of the emergency. Alarms or confusion may disorient the individual
  • Offer them assistance. If they agree, have them take your arm below the elbow and ask them to follow (do not grab hold of their arm)
  • Orient the person to your surroundings as you guide them
  • Advise them of any obstacles in their path
  • When you have reached safety, orient the person to where they are, and ask if any further assistance is needed before leaving them

To Assist Hearing Impaired Persons:

  • Flash room lights, wave your arms or tap the person's shoulder to get their attention
  • Write on the board or paper what the nature of the emergency is and the evacuation route
  • Ask if they require assistance

To Assist Mobility Impaired Persons:

  • Always ask individuals first if they have special needs or requirements, if they would like assistance, and how best to assist them
  • Individuals using wheelchairs may be pushed or accompanied to safety
  • Individuals using canes, crutches, or walkers should evacuate themselves, except if rapid evacuation is required
  • Contact Public Safety or other trained campus personnel and wait for help before transferring a person from a wheelchair or down a stairway, unless the situation is imminently life-threatening
  • Special evacuation chairs may be used for stairway evacuation or to transport injured or non-ambulatory persons. These chairs are mounted near stairwells

Mitigation Strategies:

  • Situational Awareness Training (Keenan Safe Colleges)
    • Densely Populated Areas
