This award was presented to us by the nonprofit Statewide Educational Wrapup Program
(SEWUP). SEWUP is a consolidated construction insurance program covering the job-site
risks of: district as owner, architects, construction manager, general contractor,
contractors, and subcontractors of all tiers.
SEWUP is a not-for-profit Joint Powers Authority (JPA) comprised of 400 California
Schools and Community College Districts and has insured over 200+ projects totaling
over $1.5 billion in construction value. We have been awarded this honor based on
our proactive efforts to improve safety during the construction of Building 9 Student
Resource Center at Cañada college.
Insurance is required for all contractors and subcontractors who are working on a
project. They are required to give proof of
- Workers’ Compensation and Employer’s Liability Insurance
- General Liability Insurance for Personal Injury, Bodily Injury and Property Damage
Liability
- Builder’s Risk
- Contractor’s Pollution Liability
During our previous Capital Improvement Plan, we required contractors and subcontractors
to purchase these policies individually and to provide us with proof of insurance.
These costs are passed on to the District. This entailed the purchase of many different
policies by contractors of varying sizes and cost levels. In order to lower those
costs and to ensure compliance with our insurance requirements, San Mateo County Community
College District decided to implement an OCIP program.
OCIP is an acronym for Owner Controlled Insurance Program. With OCIP, the District
purchases the insurance described above for all contractors and subcontractors. This
insurance covers them for all operations on our project sites, but does not cover
them for other projects. This improves our ability to negotiate better prices and
to spread risk throughout all of our projects.
Contractors and Subcontractors remain responsible for purchasing their firms' bonds,
automobile and equipment insurance.
