Description: The upper and lower play yards at the Mary Meta Lazarus Child Development Center (CDC) at College of San Mateo were outdated and, in the case of the steep connecting pathway, posed a safety risk for the children and staff. To address these issues, this project was developed to provide a safe and accessible outdoor area for the pre-school children participating in CDC programs. The project scope included demolition, site preparation and grading, construction of an accessible ramp connecting the upper and lower play yards, walkways, railings, fences and paving, and installation of a new play structure as well as drinking fountain, landscaping and irrigation.

Benefit: This project has provided a safe, accessible and delightful outdoor area for the pre-school children participating in CDC programs.  Motor skills development is an important component of childhood education and has been proven to enhance development of cognitive skills in young children.
