Before you Apply
Before you apply, we recommend preparing in the following ways:
- Explore which Global Internships location is the best fit for you by attending an information session and contact the SMCCCD
Study Abroad Office for more information.
- Speak with a study abroad and financial aid advisor about study abroad funding. Research
scholarships and make sure you know when scholarship deadlines are.
Application Process
Please note that you cannot save and return to the application later. Please examine all information below before starting and prepare all required materials. Type your essays in a separate Word document so you may cut and paste into the application when you are ready.
The Global Internships application requires:
- Answers to essays (500 words maximum per essay). Answer each question thoroughly with
concise paragraphs. See SAMPLE ESSAYS here.
- What is your major, and in what type of industry are you hoping to gain experience? What types of skill sets would you like to gain?

How will this program help you reach your academic and career goals?
- Give an example of your strategies for working in teams and collaborating with others, including communicating with people from different cultural and language backgrounds.

What aspects of this internship do you expect will be the most challenging for you, and how will you prepare for and overcome these challenge?
- Scholarship question: How will a scholarship impact you and make your global virtual
internship possible? How will you share your learning with the SMCCCD community upon
completion of your global internship?
- A copy of your most recent college transcript
- SMCCCD students can obtain their unofficial transcripts by logging in to WebSMART and emailing your unofficial transcript to yourself.
- SMCCCD students can obtain their unofficial transcripts by logging in to WebSMART and emailing your unofficial transcript to yourself.
- An updated resume
- Two academic or professional references (contact information only; no letter of recommendation
required.
After you Apply
- Eligible applicants will be invited in for an interview with the Global Internship
Selection Panel. Students accepted into the program will begin the internship placement
process with their placement advisor starting April.
- Prior to beginning the internship placement process, all accepted students will participate
in a one-on-one advising appointment and will review and submit a student agreement.
- A program deposit will be charged to your student account. The deposit is due before
the placement process begin. Students who do not submit the program deposit will be
withdrawn from the program. Please see program refund policy for further details.
** Please note that the deposit amount goes towards payment of the program fees and is fully refundable until date TBD. The deposit is
not an additional charge.**
- All students in the program are required to enroll in a 3-unit course in summer, a
Cooperative Education course - COOP 671 General-Global, through Skyline College. Students must attend all class meetings and mandatory program
orientations. The COOP Ed units are transferable to the California State Universities (CSU).
- Obtain a valid passport with an expiration date beyond February of the following year and research any travel documentation you need to travel abroad. You may schedule an appointment with the Skyline College Passport Office online.
