Migration Celebration

Congratulations Class of 2021!

In this new land of 99 Cent Stores

Only the emotional trauma is free.

They will gift you fear, do not take it

They will offer you shame, never let your head drop in response.

They will hate you, do not let their anger fill your heart.

They hate you simply because they know your power,

Because they have been working to extinguish you for Generations

yet the flames have never gone out.

Their ancestors stoke the coals from their graves

and the legs of your people have buckled but never fallen

for still you rise.

“Letter to My Family of Displaced Peoples”
