Global Virtual Team Internships, Summer 2023

Join a high-impact experience developed for students who wish to enhance their career skills and gain practical, online work experience in an international setting. Work with in a team of three to five students to deliver a consulting project to a global employer. Learn how to navigate an international and online work environment. Demonstrate in-demand skills such as teamwork, cross-cultural communications, project management and data analysis. Leverage this experience as the next step in your global career.

Internships may be with companies based in locations such as Canada, Germany, or the U.S. (New York or the San Francisco Bay Area). Your exact team-based internship is determined through a placement process with your internship placement advisor. Work in a team of three to five students to deliver a consulting project for a global employer based in Canada, Germany or the US (SF or NY). Learn how to navigate an international and online work environment. Program includes:

  • Program orientation sessions, including preparation for global teamwork in remote setting
  • Individual pre-placement meetings, including technology review session
  • Industry-specific resume review
  • Workshops, including preparation for video interviews and professional communications
  • Personalized placement process, including project scoping, matching, interview facilitation, confirmation of internship details, and assistance with administrative paperwork
  • Location-specific resources and recommendations
  • Location-specific orientation to city, industry, and internship placement
  • Ongoing coaching & troubleshooting, including weekly temperature checks and small group skills building (i.e. research skills or data analytics or infographics)
  • Coordinated access to local and regional events, such as movie nights, cultural performances or cooking lessons

Your internship program includes a series of professional events and cultural activities designed specifically to make the most of your internship, connect with the local community, and build global employability. Team-Based Internship (Canada)

The Global Internships team works to match you with a team project that most closely connects to your career goals, interests, and experience level. Internships in Canada are available in a variety of fields, and a placement is guaranteed.

Examples of past internships:

●      Arts Agency: assisting with planning for virtual events and lecture series, creating email newsletters, and researching funding opportunities

●      Consumer Goods Company: providing marketing and sales support while updating database management protocols

●      Engineering Firm: working on product development by building models that quantify the value of sustainability and researching new features for the model to modify it to be used in Canada as well as the United States

●      Film Industry: assisting with post-production and editing or reviewing budget documents and supporting operations review

Opportunities can vary year-to-year due to such factors as market trends, time of year, and economic trends. Common industry sectors for team internships include, but are not limited to:

●      Business & Finance: professional services, auditing, recruitment support, consulting, trade associations, and more

●      Engineering & Design: software design, website maintenance, impact reporting, game development, beta testing, model modification, and more

●      Healthcare & Education: public health, research, policy analysis, constituent outreach, EdTech, and more

●      Marketing & Communications: public relations, social media development, content creation, post-production support, brand management, and more

Some challenging internship fields to place in Canada are:

  • Banks often have strict recruiting preferences or structured internship programs with local universities already in place. Alternate opportunities include mid-sized or boutique firms that specialize in data analysis or auditing.
  • Medical placements or any field requiring handling of confidential data or information is unlikely. Alternate opportunities include research, public health or nonprofit agencies.

Team-Based Internship (U.S. - New York City)

The Global Internships team works to match you with a team project that most closely connects to your career goals, interests, and experience level. Internships in New York City are available in a variety of fields, and a placement is guaranteed.

Examples of past internships:

●      Public Relations Firm: writing press releases, creating pitch documents, drafting campaign plans and strategies, communicating with clients, creating and scheduling social media content

●      Financial Planning and Wealth Management Company: conducting industry research, analyzing and organizing data, performing due diligence, conducting business valuations

●      Arts & Culture Nonprofit: assisting with planning for virtual events and lecture series, creating email newsletters, researching funding opportunities, virtual administration and bookkeeping

Opportunities can vary year-to-year due to such factors as market trends, time of year, and economic trends. Common industry sectors for internships include, but are not limited to:

●      Business & Marketing: professional services, financial services, consulting, branding, public relations, advertising, public relations, and more

●      Healthcare & Education: healthcare management, research, education, children’s services support, fitness, policy, and more

●      Arts & Culture: design firms, retail, ecommerce, fashion, entertainment, galleries, and more

Some challenging internship fields to place in New York City are:

  • MNCs or Big Four firms often have strict recruiting preferences or pipelines already in place. Alternate opportunities include mid-sized or boutique firms.
  • Medical placements or any field requiring handling of confidential data or information is unlikely. Alternate opportunities include public health or general support not related to specific clients or patients.

Team-Based Internship (U.S. - San Francisco)

The Global Internships team works to match you with a team project that most closely connects to your career goals, interests, and experience level. Internships in San Francisco are available in a variety of fields, and a placement is guaranteed.

Examples of past internships:

●      Marketing Agency: compiling suite of graphics for clients, including logo designs, mock-ups, user interfaces, and page layout designs

●      Financial Services Consultancy: assisting in building financial models with credible data in various areas as part of portfolio management strategy

●      Social Services NGO: assisting program manager with client outreach and assist in development of online activities with families and children

Opportunities can vary year-to-year due to such factors as market trends, time of year, and economic trends. Common industry sectors for internships include, but are not limited to:

●      Business & Trade: professional services, regional convention bureaus, industry associations, financial services, and more

●      Marketing & Technology: software development, social media strategy, public relations, brand management, web design, and more

●      Healthcare & Education: policy research, NGOs, think tanks, community agencies, galleries, healthcare consultancies, and more

Some challenging internship fields to place in San Francisco are:

●      Engineering placements, specifically civil, mechanical, or chemical, are often six months long and require in-depth subject-matter knowledge. Alternate opportunities include placements with functional areas such as marketing or operations within firms to gain exposure to the field.

●      Medical placements or any field requiring handling of confidential data or information is unlikely. Alternate opportunities include research, public health or nonprofit agencies.

Students are required to enroll in Cooperative Education

The Cooperative Education (COOP Ed) Program at Skyline College offers students the opportunity to earn elective units of credit for work experience. Employed students establish written job related goals with their work supervisors which are submitted to the assigned Cooperative Education Instructor. The COOP Ed student must work in the established goal areas and make measurable progress on each written goal during the course of the semester. At the end of the semester the COOP Ed Student submits COOP Ed timesheets that reflect the hours worked during the semester. Student and supervisor evaluations of the written goals are completed at the end of the semester. Students may earn a total of 16 COOP Ed units through SMCCCD. A total of 16 COOP Ed units are transferable to the California State Universities (CSU).

 At the time of program start date, you must satisfy the following program eligibility requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher (please note that certain majors may require a higher GPA; please inquire during your advising appointment)
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 units of college level coursework prior to program

*This relates only to the Global Career Center (GCC) program fees, NOT your course tuition, which is paid to Skyline College. Course tuition follows Skyline College refund policies.

  • A $TBC GCC program deposit is due upon confirmation of program participation by March TBC, 2023.
  • If a student withdraws from the GCC placement process more than 14 days after their pre-placement meeting with GCC, they are responsible for the $TBC USD non-refundable program deposit.
  • If a student withdraws after the program start, no refund is available
  • Withdrawals must be received by GCC in writing via email - info@globalcareercenter.org. Students must copy GCC into any notifications of withdrawal or change of status they send directly to their internship supervisor. They must also notify SMCCCD Study Abroad of their withdrawal or change of status – studyabroad@smccd.edu.
  • Exceptions to the refund policy are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

In order to complete a virtual internship, you will need regular access to a computer/laptop and reliable internet at various times of the day and/or evening, as you will be working with companies based in different time zones. Please email studyabroad@smccd.edu if you will need assistance in obtaining the required technology.
