What prompted you to want to become a Building Captain?:
As someone who works in higher education, I know that ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the entire division is paramount. Learning about safety measures and protocols is a professional obligation and a personal commitment to creating a secure and conducive environment for everyone involved.

In my role, I prioritize staying informed about safety best practices, emergency procedures, and relevant regulations to implement comprehensive safety measures within our division effectively.

Additionally, I recognize the importance of promoting a culture of safety and accountability within our division. This involves encouraging open communication, reporting of safety incidents or concerns, and fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to take ownership of their safety and the safety of others.

Overall, my commitment to prioritizing safety extends beyond mere compliance with regulations; it is a fundamental value that guides my actions and decision-making processes in ensuring the well-being of our academic community. Through continuous education, collaboration, and proactive measures, we can create a safer and more resilient environment for all.

What would you recommend to others about the Building Captain training?:

As someone who values safety and works in higher education, I highly recommend participating in Building Captain training. Here are some reasons why:

2. Empowerment: Building Captain training empowers individuals to take on leadership roles and responsibilities in emergencies. By serving as a point of contact for building occupants and assisting with evacuation procedures or emergency response efforts, Building Captains contribute to a safer and more resilient campus community.

3. Community Engagement: Building Captain training fosters community and participant collaboration. By working together to address safety concerns, share best practices, and support one another, Building Captains can build strong relationships within their buildings and across campus.

4. Continuous Learning: Building Captain training provides ongoing education and skill development opportunities. Participants have access to resources, updates on safety protocols, and opportunities for refresher courses or additional training sessions to stay informed and prepared for evolving safety challenges.

5. Positive Impact: By becoming a Building Captain, individuals have the opportunity to make a positive impact on campus safety. Whether it's helping to prevent accidents, facilitating timely responses to emergencies, or promoting a culture of preparedness and vigilance, Building Captains play a vital role in creating a safer environment for all campus community members.

Overall, Building Captain training offers valuable benefits for individuals interested in enhancing their knowledge of emergency preparedness, taking on leadership roles, and contributing to a safer campus environment. I highly recommend participating in this training opportunity to make a difference in your community and ensure the well-being of those around you.

What prompted you to want to become a Building Captain?
I was interested in becoming a Building Captain because I want to be more informed and feel prepared on what action to take in times of emergency. I've previously taken First Aid, CPR, and BLS courses, but they typically address emergencies at a small scale. Through Building Captain training, my goal was to learn how to react to different types of emergency situations when a higher number of people are involved.

What would you recommend to others about the Building Captain training?
The part of the training that I thought was most important to know was how to properly use a fire extinguisher and how to light a flare. A fire extinguisher and a flare are items commonly known to be used in emergency situations, but knowing how to properly use them is something I was never taught. This training also inspired me to create a "survival kit" to keep in my car in case of roadside emergencies.

What prompted you to want to become a Building Captain?
After going through the pandemic with my family, I realized the need for ongoing emergency preparedness. Once we collectively returned to campus, I wanted to become a Building Captain to learn best practices and serve my community in moments that require clear communication and purposeful action.

What would you recommend to others about the Building Captain training?
The Building Captain training is invaluable. I recommend asking questions -- even if they seem obvious -- because you never know if you might learn something you'll later need in a real-world situation. I also recommend staying in touch with the Emergency Management team as they're extremely helpful and always willing to schedule local trainings for departments.

What prompted you to want to become a Building Captain?
Since the Library is a community hub, we work with not just our own campus population but with the members of the surrounding community. Part of the work we do is fostering a welcoming and safe space for our users. Since the return to campus after the pandemic, the Library has been regularly identified as a key space that students want available. Additionally we are the student service that has the most open hours (including Saturday hours) across the district. However, this often times has meant that Library staff had had to step up our support in various ways including responding to emergency situations while we wait for support. I wanted to the the Building Captain training because of the increase in challenging situations that were coming up in the Library. I wanted to not only help keep our users safe but the staff as well seeing as in a lot of situations we were on our own.

What would you recommend to others about the Building Captain training?
I absolutely think that everyone should do the Building Captain training or at the very least the CPR, AED and First Aid portions. Emergencies will always happen and whether we like it or not there will be times when we will be on our own and we will have to make critical decisions and take critical actions to keep everyone safe. Having this training under your belt helps you be better prepared for these situations and helps you prepare the team around you because at the end of the day, we are responsible for our own safety.

I would absolutely recommend that others take part in the Building Captain training - the information that is reviewed and the hands-on activities are a must! What prompted you to want to become a Building Captain?

The reason behind my interest in becoming a Building Captain stemmed from a strong desire to enhance my ability to support the community. With over ten years of dedicated service in Funeral Service, a significant portion of which involved coordinating responses to mass casualty incidents, I've developed a strong skill set in emergency management. Recognizing the importance of adhering to established protocols to effectively guide teams through emergencies, I am committed to ensuring proper support, whether as the first or final responder. Given my steadfast dedication to community assistance, pursuing building captain training was a logical step to continue fulfilling that commitment.

What would you recommend to others about the Building Captain training?

This training program was incredibly comprehensive and valuable. Day One begins with an introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS), which is essential as many in the community may not be familiar with it. Understanding ICS provides a framework for visualizing response levels and team structures, which is crucial for effective assistance during emergencies. Without this understanding of structure, protocol, and response levels, our ability to help effectively may be limited or even obstructive.

The fire extinguisher training was not only enjoyable but also a critical reminder of the importance of using proper techniques and understanding the differences among various types of fire extinguishers. Similarly, learning how to use evacuation chairs is vital, as they vary in design and functionality.

Personally, I found assembling our Go-Bags with trauma kits and first aid supplies particularly enjoyable, reflecting my passion for wound care and closure. The CPR/AED introduction training provided by the team instilled a strong sense of confidence, with the equipment being well-maintained and fully operational.

Overall, I highly recommend this training to everyone, not just those interested in becoming building captains. The skills and knowledge gained are invaluable and can potentially save lives. It's an investment in essential life skills that everyone should have.
