Flooding and Water Damage

In the event of a water leak, it is important to take immediate action to minimize damage and ensure the safety of individuals. Follow these steps:

  1. Call Public Safety Dispatch at (650) 738-7000 and provide the following information:

    • Your name
    • Telephone number
    • Location of the leak (building, floor, room number, etc.)
    • The severity of the leak
    • Indicate if any people or equipment are involved or in imminent danger
  2. If you are knowledgeable about the source of the water and confident in your ability to stop it (e.g., unclogging a drain, or turning off the water supply), proceed cautiously to do so.

  3. Avoid contact with electrical appliances or outlets near the leak to prevent electrical hazards.

  4. If there is any potential danger, evacuate the area immediately.

  5. If it is safe to do so, take the following actions:

    • Secure vital equipment, records, and hazardous materials by moving them to higher, safer ground.
    • Shut off all non-essential electrical equipment.
  6. Locate individuals with special needs and provide assistance if possible. Otherwise, inform emergency responders of their location.

  7. Refer to the Evacuation Procedures section of the provided booklet for additional information.

  8. Do not return to the affected building until instructed to do so by Public Safety or the appropriate authority.

Taking these steps will help mitigate the impact of the water leak, protect individuals, and ensure a prompt and organized response to the situation.
