Windstorm

The National Weather Service has developed a system of "watches" and "warnings" that are issued when severe weather conditions may occur. A watch is issued when a thunderstorm is in excess of 55 mph, or a tornado is likely to develop within a certain area and timeframe. If a warning has been issued, and there is sufficient time to do so, the campus may be evacuated. If it has been deemed too dangerous to leave, the order may be given to shelter in place. The District may consider convening the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) if a warning has been issued.

If there is advance warning:

  1. Quickly seek shelter inside
  2. Close all windows, blinds and drapes
  3. Notify all personnel of the windstorm
  4. Remain inside
  5. Evacuate areas that are in direct impact areas
  6. Avoid enclosures with long roof spans

If there is no advance warning:

  1. Take cover immediately in interior rooms or along an inside wall, and ensure you are not near large, heavy objects and windows
  2. Open doors if possible
  3. Remain calm
