Who is Eligible to Enroll

To be eligible for enrollment in the Part-Time Faculty Health Insurance Program at SMCCCD, the following criteria must be met:

    • Minimum FTE Requirement: Part-time faculty must have a minimum of 0.4 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) with SMCCD. OR

      • Combined FTE from Multiple Districts: Faculty members may qualify if they have a combined 0.4 FTE from multiple community college districts. Verification for Other Employment: Faculty who do not meet the 0.4 FTE requirement with SMCCCD must complete the verification form to confirm their eligibility. Benefit Election

Please make your 2024 Benefit Elections in https://www.afenroll.com/enroll. For login instructions, refer to the AFenroll Self-Service Instructions  . If you need assistance, you can schedule an appointment with an American Fidelity representative.

What you can do 

  • Add yourself and eligible dependents to your medical plan.

After this special Open Enrollment period, changes to your medical insurance will require a Qualifying Event. For more information, please refer to the Qualifying Event FAQs.

  • Open Enrollment begins October 14th, 2024 and ends October 25th, 2024, effective November 1st, 2024.

General Information

What is the new benefit for part-time faculty?

Under the Memorandum of Understanding MOU   signed on June 21, 2024, part-time faculty with assignments equivalent to 40% of full-time will be eligible for medical benefit coverage at the same level of District-paid premium contributions as full-time faculty.

When can I enroll in the medical benefits?

Enrollment will be open from October 14, 2024, to October 25, 2024. Enrollment submissions will take effect on November 1, 2024.

What are the coverage periods?

The coverage periods are November through April and May through October.

How does this eligibility differ from the health insurance reimbursement program?

Enrollment Process

How do I enroll in the medical benefits?

You can enroll using the existing benefits portal, American Fidelity. Click here to access the benefits portal.

When will the enrollment system be ready?

You can begin enrolling on Monday, October 14, 2024.

What documentation must I provide?

  • Part I: If you meet eligibility through SMCCCD, HR will run a report, and there is no need to submit documentation.
  • Part II: If you meet eligibility through two or more community colleges, you will need to upload confirmation for each District you work at the time you request enrollment. Upload confirmation

What if I drop below the 40% load during the coverage period?

Your coverage will remain in place throughout the coverage period.

What if I no longer have an active assignment or my pay is not enough to cover the out of pocket amount during the coverage period?

You will have 10 days to pay the District directly. If not paid within 10 days, you may lose your coverage.
