Sick Leave

  • At retirement, unused balance is credited as additional service time.
  • Report absences monthly in hours via Employee Self Service.
  • Medical verification may be required for extended illness or injury leave.

Vacation Leave

Note: Accrual occurs at the end of each month. Maximum accumulation is capped at two years of vacation hours. Vacation requests must generally be submitted at least 5 working days in advance.

  • Requests can be made for up to 4 continuous weeks at a time.
  • Supervisors may block up to 6 weeks per fiscal year. District seniority governs scheduling conflicts.
  • If an employee hits the accrual cap and a vacation request is denied, they may request a cash-out of up to two weeks per fiscal year.
  • Unused hours are paid out upon separation from the district.

  • Hours are adjusted for reduced workload per AFT §11.1. Additional days possible for summer assignments of at least 6 weeks.

  • Balance transferable within one year of separation per Education Code §87782 and §87783 — download transfer form  .
  • Report absences monthly via the Faculty Absence Affidavit Form.

Professional and Project Leaves

  • Faculty attending professional development programs or conferences may receive paid or partial-pay leave.
  • Short-term projects (≤ 3 weeks), long-term projects, and extended leaves are covered at varying pay levels depending on circumstances.
  • See AFT §13   for complete terms and eligibility requirements.

Banked Units

  • Full-time tenure faculty who accept overload assignments may bank those units and receive equivalent salary at a later date.
  • Arrangements are coordinated with the dean; final approval is given by the Vice President. Limits apply — see AFT §22  .

Note: Holidays falling on Sunday are observed the following Monday. Holidays on Saturday are observed the preceding Friday.

Family and Medical Programs

  • Baby Bonding: Use accrued sick leave within the first year of birth or adoption. Written verification required. (Maternity and Parental Leave Info)
  • Family Illness: Up to 6 accrued sick leave days per fiscal year for a serious illness of an immediate family member.
  • Pregnancy Disability Leave: Up to 4 months unpaid leave for a pregnancy-related medical condition.
  • Catastrophic Illness: Employees may donate 1 sick day per fiscal year; disabled employees may receive up to 50 donated days. (Program Policy  )
  • Workers' Compensation: Temporary disability benefit is tax-free (approx. ⅔ of prior earnings). The District provides 60 days of full salary.

  • Bereavement: 5 days for the death of a spouse/domestic partner, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, sibling, in-laws, or a relative living in the immediate household.
  • Personal Necessity: Up to 8 days per fiscal year (drawn from sick leave) for emergencies, accidents, court appearances, religious holidays, or additional bereavement.
  • Three of the 8 personal necessity days may be taken at the employee's discretion without prior approval, provided the supervisor is notified before the shift begins.
  • Jury duty is compensated at full salary. Submit proof of service by emailing a copy to HR.
  • School visit limit is 40 hours per calendar year for K-12 or licensed daycare facilities.
  • Military leave covers initial enlistment, National Guard training, and active duty activation.

Indigenous Peoples' Day Floating Holiday

All non-faculty employees are credited with one floating holiday per fiscal year in recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day. Please follow these usage guidelines:

  • Flexible Scheduling: May be used at any time during the fiscal year. It does not need to be taken on or near the actual holiday.
  • Full-Day Requirement: Must be used in its entirety on one specific day. It cannot be split into hourly increments.
  • Approval Process: Requires advance request and is subject to supervisor approval (similar to vacation requests).
  • Use-It-or-Lose-It: This benefit expires at the end of the fiscal year (June 30). Unused floating holidays do not roll over.
