Public Disclosure

An acknowledgment that the school signed and returned the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution used—or intends to use—at least 50 percent of the CARES Act funds received for emergency grants to students.

The San Mateo County Community College District (Cañada College, College of San Mateo and Skyline College) signed the Certification and Agreement on April 30, 2020. The three colleges will allot 75% of the CARES Act funds received for emergency grants to students. Of these funds 67% were disbursed in the Spring 2020 semester and 33% were disbursed in the Fall 2020 semester. As needed, additional funds were reallocated from institutional funds to support emergency grants.

* Cañada College allocated additional institutional funding towards grants in the fall 2020 semester.

The method(s) used to determine which students received the emergency grants and how much they received.

Spring 2020 – Students may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:

  • Completed a FAFSA for 2019-2020, or,
  • Eligible to complete a FAFSA for 2019-2020
    • Have a valid Social Security Number
    • Have registered with selective service (males only)
    • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Are a citizen or eligible non-citizen
    • Registered in spring 2020 courses on or after March 13, 2020
    • Students in programs leading to a degree or certificate

Students ineligible to receive funds:

  • International student
  • Undocumented student
  • Non-matriculated student
  • Enrolled in online-only degree programs (SMCCCD’s colleges do not have degree programs that are fully online)
  • Dropped all courses prior to March 13, 2020

Grant Amount:

  • Pell Recipients:
    • $1100  Full-Time (12+ units)
    • $800 Part-Time (6-11.5 units)
  • Non-Pell Recipients:
    • $650 Full-Time (12+ units)
    • $500 Part-Time (6-11.5 units)

Fall 2020 – Students may be eligible if they meet the following requirements:

For U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens:

  • Completed a FAFSA for 2020-2021, or,
  • Eligible to complete a FAFSA for 2020-2021
    • Have a valid Social Security Number
    • Have registered with Selective Service (males only)
    • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Are a citizen or eligible non-citizen
    • Registered in fall 2020 courses on or after September 8, 2020
    • Students in programs leading to a degree or certificate

Grant Amount:

  • Pell Recipients:
    • $1,100  Full-Time (12+ units)
    • $800 Part-Time (6-11.5 units)
  • Non-Pell Recipients:
    • $650 Full-Time (12+ units)
    • $500 Part-Time (6-11.5 units)

For Undocumented students (per Legal Advisory 2020-07    ):

  • Completed a CADAA for 2020-2021, or,
  • Completed a Supplemental Form
    • Have registered with Selective Service (males only)
    • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Registered in fall 2020 courses on or after September 8, 2020
    • Students in programs leading to a degree or certificate

Students ineligible to receive funds:

  • International student
  • Non-matriculated student
  • Enrolled in online-only degree programs (SMCCCD’s colleges do not have degree programs that are fully online)
  • Dropped all courses prior to September 9, 2020

Grant Amount:

  • $650 Full-Time (12+ units)
  • $500 Part-Time (6-11.5 units)

Note: For students who do not claim their full or partial award, funds will be canceled and re-awarded to another student. However, this is done only after multiple attempts at communicating with the student. One communication includes a 10-day final notice that funds will be canceled if they don’t claim their award refund. For students who only claim a portion of their award, their total award will differ from the amounts listed above.

Spring 2020 Phases of Awarding:

  • Phase 1
    • Students identified as Pell recipients, homeless, former foster youth, veterans and/or non-Pell FAFSA filers.
  • Phase 2
    • Remaining CARES Funds will be determined by CARES Grant Supplemental form for non-FAFSA filers. Awarding will continue through Fall 2020 semester.

Fall 2020 Phases of Awarding:

  • Phase 1
    • Students identified as undocumented, Pell recipients, homeless, former foster youth, veterans and/or non-Pell FAFSA filers.
  • Phase 2
    • Remaining CARES Funds will be determined by CARES Grant Supplemental Form for non-FAFSA filers. Awarding will continue through Fall 2020 semester.

Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided to students concerning the emergency grants.
All students received a notification when they were awarded HEERF funds. The notification explained what the money could be used for, refund options, and which students need to submit documentation.

Students that need to submit additional documentation include FAFSA eligible students without a FAFSA with the college (s) and undocumented students without Selective Service verification. These students received a separate notification instructing them to complete CARES  Grant Supplemental Form to determine eligibility.
